Short sleeve season is upon us! If you are among the 40% of adults who suffer from Keratosis Pilaris, you may not be so excited about this.

Keratosis Pilaris (KP of Follicular Keratosis) is a common skin condition, manifested by the appearance of small rough bumps on the skin. Although it is most common on the upper arms, it can appear anywhere on the body, with the exception of the palms and soles of the feet. KP is totally harmless but for some can be very embarrassing.

There are different types of KP, ranging from red and inflamed to just rough with no irritation. Because of this KP is sometimes mistaken for acne or goose bumps. KP occurs when the body produces too much keratin – a protein of the skin in the hair follicle, forming a hard plug. People with KP are more likely to have eczema and other dry skin conditions. Dry climates/seasons exacerbate the condition.

While KP cannot be cured, it can be effectively treated, if done so consistently. Creams containing Vitamin A or Hydroxy Acids have been shown to help. These ingredients increase cell turnover, decreasing keratin in the skin. Exfoliation and intensive moisturizing creams will also improve the appearance and texture of the skin. Once treatment is discontinued the condition reverts to its original state.

An Organic Eminence Sugar Scrub is a fabulous way to get a jumpstart on KP treatment. Sugar cane and AlphaHydroxy Acids work together to slough off any and all dead skin cells they can find! The rich body lotion will leave you hydrated and glowing.

Some great products to try at home would be Naseberry Body Lotion, Naseberry Cranberry Body Wash and Coconut Sugar Scrub.

For those who suffer from Keratosis Pilaris of their face, Glymed Plus’ Gentle Face Wash and Treatment Cream both contain Glycolic Acid, an AHA, known to improve the appearance and texture of the skin.
